Writing Contests and Kahoot!

Class began the usual way. Students completed the handout attached below for their welcome activity, and they discussed each central idea with their group members before going over it as a class.

Welcome Activity – Examining Central Idea

Next came writing time, and the writing prompt for today was actually a writing contest! To enter the contest, students need to begin their writing with those classic words from the beginning of Star Wars: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

If you want more information on the contest, please see me.

After writing, we completed W.O.W. since we ran out of time last week, and then students took a pre-test in preparation for moving into our next unit soon.

When students completed the pre-test, they wrote sentences for our words from last week. I provided the frames below, but they are only a suggestion, and students are always welcome to create sentences that are completely their own.

Disdain – Disdain washes over me anytime __________________.

Malleable – I squeezed the malleable _____ and _________.

Ominous – The teacher/coach spoke ominous words when he/she said, “_______.”

Quell – Whenever _____ happens I get too _____ and need to quell my emotions.

We ended class by reviewing the capitalization rules students discovered on Friday by playing Kahoot!

Homework:

  1. Read for 25 minutes.
  2. Bring earphones tomorrow if you can.
